Maldah: Lake district of BengalBy Tapu
Maldah district is a part of India's largest wetland system i.e. gangetictic Plains. The District is a house of several small and india's main ganga riversystem. The continuous sifting of such river creates so many natural palustrine. These wetlands are mainly seasonally waterlogged. Local people called those wetlands as "Beel or Belot". Biodiversity of these wetlands are very interesting. These wetlands supports 345 flowering plants, 6 pteridophytes, 2 bryophytes and thousands algae. Among the floras more than 56 species are edible and medicinal. Except flora sevearal migratory and domicile birds visit the those wetlands during post monsoon season (November - March). Thses areas are very favourite for those avifaunas because of their food and breeding. Chatral beel, Barbilla beel, Madhaipur beel, Bolatuli beel, Ganga river (Farakka), Sagardighi, Sanak beel, Konar beel are the very important areas where the bird population are very rich. Wetland ecosystems are very distubed by various anthropological and natural pressure. Rapid urbanisation, developmental work, population growth, poolution, bird poaching, monoculture, execcessive agricultural and fishing activity are the main treats of the wetland and its biodiversity.
